Change in Venue: Local Towns Transition to Litchfield Judicial District

If you live or do business in Granby, Canton, Simsbury, Avon, Farmington, or Burlington, there’s an important update: civil and criminal matters involving people and businesses from these towns must now be handled in the Litchfield Judicial District/G.A. 18, at the Torrington Courthouse (50 Field Street).

What This Means for You

  • Court Filings: Cases that previously went to Hartford or New Britain are now sent to Torrington.

  • Jury Duty: Summonses for residents of these towns will come from Torrington.

  • Civil and Criminal Matters: The change affects all case types.

The Torrington Courthouse opened in 2017, replacing the historic but overburdened buildings in Litchfield and Bantam. Because it’s currently handling fewer cases, clients should see a more comfortable and efficient environment for proceedings, reducing delays, and getting resolutions more quickly. Clients and jurors who previously traveled to city courthouses will appreciate a large, free parking lot, and a spacious building with room to meet and prepare with your legal team.

Why Local Expertise Matters

With your case now in Torrington, working with a law firm familiar with the Litchfield Judicial District can make a significant difference:

  • Relationships with Court Staff: Local firms regularly interact with clerks, marshals, and judges in Torrington.

  • Convenience for Clients: Litchfield County attorneys provide more accessible, responsive representation.

What Happens to Existing Cases?

Cases filed before October 1, 2025 stay in their original districts unless there’s a motion to transfer. All new matters for these towns must now be directed to the Litchfield Judicial District. Filing in the wrong district will cause delays—or even dismissal of time-sensitive claims.
